In the modern world, yoga has taken on many forms. From ancient scriptures and spiritual teachings to the beautifully curated Instagram feeds filled with flawless asanas, the practice has evolved in ways that were once unimaginable. And while some may argue that yoga on social media dilutes its true essence, I believe it can also serve as a powerful tool to spread the word about this beautiful practice.

The Evolution of Yoga in the Western World
As someone who was fortunate enough to learn the fundamentals of yoga in India, I’ve experienced firsthand the depth and wisdom of this ancient practice. Traditional yoga isn’t just about postures – it’s about philosophy, breath, discipline, and an internal journey toward self-awareness. However, in the Western world, yoga has naturally adapted to fit modern lifestyles. While it may not always resemble its original form, the essence of yoga – mindfulness, connection, and transformation – remains alive.
Living, teaching and photographing lots of yogis in the UK, I see how we each carve out our own unique path in yoga. Some of us come to the practice for physical strength, others for emotional healing, stress relief or spiritual growth. There’s no right or wrong way, only the way that resonates with each individual. The key is to make yoga our own, integrating it into our daily lives in a way that aligns with our personal needs and circumstances.

Social Media: A Tool for Connection and Expression
While yoga is deeply personal, it is also an expression. In today’s world, social media is a platform that allows us to share, inspire, and connect. When I capture yoga teachers through my photography, I’m not just taking pictures – I’m helping them tell their story, express their journey, and reach the people they want to serve.
Instagram and other social platforms may not fully capture the depth of a yoga practice, but they can be used mindfully to spread awareness, build communities and inspire others to step onto the mat. Whether it’s sharing a thoughtful caption, a mindful movement, or a personal breakthrough, these digital spaces offer opportunities to make yoga more accessible and relatable.

Finding Your Own Path
The beauty of yoga is that it meets you where you are. Whether you’re deep in meditation, mastering a new posture, or simply breathing with intention, your practice is yours alone. My way of sharing yoga is through Present Practices, a blend of yoga and photography that helps teachers refine their message and connect with their students. Through my lens, I capture more than just a pose – I capture energy, intention, and the unique essence of each teacher.
So yes, yoga is much more than an Instagram picture. But if a picture can inspire someone to start their journey, or help a teacher share their passion, then it has its place in this modern world. Let’s use all the tools we have to keep this practice alive and evolving, while staying true to its heart.

If you’re a Yoga or Pilates teacher looking to capture your essence through photography, let’s create something meaningful together.
