When it comes to yoga photography, one of the most common concerns I hear from clients is:
“I am fat.” “What about my belly?”
Whether you’re a seasoned yoga teacher or just starting out, that vulnerable moment in front of the camera can make even the most confident person tense up. And ironically, it’s often in that moment that we forget one of the key cues we repeat in class all the time:
Engage your core.

Yes, Even the Skinniest People Have a Belly
Let’s get real: everyone has a belly. That soft part of us is natural and human – and it can show up more or less depending on the angle, breath and how connected we are to our core in the moment. I’ve worked with yoga teachers, fitness trainers and absolute beginners – and this comes up for all body types.
The truth is: even the most toned body can look completely different in a relaxed moment vs. when the core is gently activated.
That’s why during your shoot, I’m not just taking photos. I’m watching your breath, your posture and gently reminding you – like a mantra – “belly in.” Clients often tell me how grateful they are for this tiny cue that makes a big difference.
The Breath Connection
The magic happens between the inhale and the exhale. One moment can soften your belly, and the next can lift and lengthen your body beautifully. As your photographer, I look for that perfect moment – where effort and ease meet – and that’s when I click.
Posing Tips for a More Flattering Feel (Without Hiding Who You Are)
If your belly is something you’re self-conscious about, there’s so much we can do with posing, camera angles, and styling:
- Side angles and twists naturally create a more elongated silhouette
- Movement-based cues like reaching, lengthening or grounding engage the body organically
- Layered outfits or higher-waisted pants can offer comfort without distraction
- And most importantly – I direct you the whole way through so you never feel stiff or unsure
But This Isn’t Just About Yoga
Core awareness is just as important in any kind of portrait session – whether you’re standing still in front of a clean background or laughing with a coffee in hand at your branding shoot. Engaging your centre helps you stand taller, hold your energy with confidence, and feel more “switched on” in your body.
And here’s something I always keep in mind:
What works for one body may not work for another.
That’s why I don’t offer cookie-cutter posing. Whether you’re lean, curvy, athletic or soft – I guide you with different poses, angles and directions that suit your unique shape and energy. I help you feel strong, open and grounded – never awkward or over-posed.
Don’t Let Belly Worries Hold You Back
Your belly doesn’t define your beauty or your brilliance. You are worthy of being seen, exactly as you are. And my job is to help you feel safe, seen, and stunning – core engaged or not.
So if you’ve been holding off on booking your shoot because you’re worried about your tummy, let this be your sign. You don’t have to be “perfect” – you just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.
