A Yoga Photoshoot is always a chance to capture the beauty and grace of your practice in stunning visual form. But it’s easy to overlook the practicalities of preparation. Fear not! As an experienced yoga photographer based in London, I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of essentials to ensure your next photoshoot is a resounding success. My photoshoots are always come with a personalised preparation guide, but today I’ve put together a comprehensive packing guide to help you prepare for your next session with ease.
Outfits:
Variety: Pack a selection of outfits that reflect your personal style and the vibe you wish to convey. Opt for colours and patterns that complement your surroundings and make you feel confident and comfortable.
Layering: Consider layering options to accommodate changes in temperature or lighting conditions. A cardigan or shawl can add dimension to your photos while keeping you warm between shots.
Before your session I always make sure you select the right clothing, but because of excitement it’s easy to forget to pack your most important peace of outfit. It happened before, so believe me – please do a checklist before you leave your home.
Jewellery:
Subtle Accessories: Choose jewellery that enhances your look without overpowering it. Delicate bracelets, necklaces, or earrings can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your ensemble.
Statement Pieces: If you’re feeling bold, don’t hesitate to incorporate statement jewellery into your outfit. A chunky necklace or pair of earrings can elevate your look and make a striking visual impact.
Yoga Gear:
Yoga Mat: Choose a high-quality, non-slip yoga mat that provides ample support and traction for your practice. Opt for a mat in a neutral colour that complements your outfits and doesn’t distract from the photos.
Yoga Blocks/Bolster: Bring along yoga blocks and or a Bolster to assist with alignment and support in various poses. These versatile props can help you achieve deeper stretches and maintain proper form throughout the photoshoot.
Yoga Wheel: Consider bringing a yoga wheel to add variety to your poses and create visually striking shapes. The wheel can also be used to enhance backbends and stretches, adding depth and dimension to your photos.
Singing bowls, bells, malas, crystals: If these beautiful gems are included in your style and teaching method, please feel free to bring along to your shoot.
Haircare:
Hairbrush: Keep tangles at bay with a travel-sized hairbrush or comb. Smooth out any flyaways or frizz before each shot to ensure a polished appearance.
Hairbands: Secure your hair in place with a selection of hairbands or scrunchies. Opt for gentle elastic bands that won’t snag or damage your locks.
PS: don’t leave it on your wrist ☺ – 8 out of 10 yogis keep their hairbands on the wrist – but don’t worry I always check before we start the shoot
Essentials:
Wet Wipes: Stay fresh and clean throughout the photoshoot with a pack of wet wipes. Use them to freshen up your face, hands, and body between poses. Also, as most of the time you barefoot and your feet get dirty easily -so wet wipes are your saviour ☺
Flip Flops: Slip into a pair of flip flops or sandals between shots to give your feet a break and prevent discomfort from prolonged barefoot standing.
Lint Roller: Keep your outfits looking pristine with a lint roller. Remove any stray hairs, lint, or debris that may detract from the overall aesthetic of the photos.
Hydration and Nourishment:
Water: Stay hydrated throughout the photoshoot by bringing along a reusable water bottle. Sip water between poses to keep your energy levels up and ensure you’re feeling your best.
Snacks: Pack nutritious snacks such as nuts, fruit, or energy bars to fuel your body and keep hunger at bay. Choose portable options that won’t spoil or make a mess during the shoot.
Sun Protection:
Sun cream: If your photoshoot is outdoors, don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Apply a generous layer of sunscreen to exposed areas of skin to prevent sunburn and premature ageing.
PS.: Ok, here in a UK maybe is a bit extra preparation and only applies for 2-3 months, but It happened to me that I’ve got sunburned on a lavender field photo shoot. So better to be careful than become red and burnt ☺
With these essentials packed and ready to go, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle your next yoga photoshoot with confidence and ease. Remember to relax, breathe, and enjoy the process – after all, the best photos are often captured when you’re feeling relaxed and at ease in front of the camera.
Love, Kris x
